From Chaplain Rita Felton

Since arriving at the YMCA, I’ve seen firsthand the deep need for hope, healing, and light in our community. I plan to continue building the YMCA as a beacon of faith, compassion, and transformation—a safe space where people can walk their Journey to Freedom and discover who they were created to be. This work is about more than programs; it’s about restoring hearts and rebuilding lives. With God's help, our community will be healed, our families strengthened, and our youth empowered. I truly believe the next generation promises a brighter future, and it’s our responsibility to equip them with the tools, truth, and hope they need to lead well. That’s the mission I live for every day.

Chaplain Rita Felton, Ph.D.

Christian Mission Director, Columbus Mississippi YMCA

I am privileged to serve as the Chaplain and Christian Mission Director at the Frank P. Phillips YMCA in Columbus, Mississippi. My journey with the YMCA began in high school in New Haven, Connecticut, where a friend first introduced me to its mission—and life has a beautiful way of bringing things full circle. After serving 30 years in the Air Force and retiring in this community, I was blessed to have the opportunity to serve at the YMCA. It’s work that fuels my soul. YMCA stories are powerful because they remind us everyone is on a journey—to freedom, healing, and becoming their best self. And I get to help people do just that.
